This free caregiver guide offers useful information and tips for family caregivers of parents with memory loss.
Sunrise Senior Living has just released a new guide for caregivers called “Understanding the Memory Loss Journey.” In this free PDF download (or read it online), you’ll get 20 pages of tips and advice on how to care for someone with memory loss. I’m pleased the guide features an entire section on self-care called “The Healthy Caregiver,” which covers topics such as how to tap into online caregiver support resources and the value of respite care.
The Caregiver Guide covers topics such as:
- Traits of Good Caregivers
- What to Expect as a Caregiver
- 10 Warning Signs
- Building Bridges
- Meaningful Communications
- Validation Conversation Tips
- Overcoming Challenges
- Tips on Using Touch
- Giving Meaning & Purpose
- A list of resources
As you might expect, the guide also covers the services offered by Sunrise Senior Living centers, but the bulk of the content consists of useful information to help family caregivers feel more empowered to care for their loved ones at home as long as possible.
By downloading the PDF, you can print a copy, which is a nice feature. So much caregiving information, such as how to care for a parent with Alzheimer’s, exists only online. Having a print copy at hand allows you to refer quickly to tips such as those included in the guide’s “Overcoming Challenges” section.
During my personal experience caring for an elderly parent with memory loss, I certainly could have benefited from this little booklet. If you know of a caregiver struggling to care for a parent with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, please forward this post so they may access the free caregiver guide, as well. The guide provides a good starting point for how to take care of a parent with memory loss.
