MyFitnessPal – Free Calorie Counter

As you know, if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, I encourage all caregivers to place self-care at the top of their priority list. Whether you’re an Alzheimer’s caregiver, dementia caregiver, caregiver to your parent, Sandwich Generation caregiver caught between caring for your kids and your parents, you need to take care of yourself first.

The two things I try to put at the top of my self-care priority list are nutrition and exercise. Exercise, in particular, helps combat depression — a state that caregivers know all too well. And it’s not a dirty word. Exercise can be something as simple as walking around the block after dinner. If your caree is up to it, you can even exercise together. What a wonderful, healthful way for carer and caree to spend time together! And obviously if you don’t fuel your body with wholesome nutrients, you won’t have the stamina a caregiver needs to get through the day.

Now, I’m not going to lie to you. Even as a nurse, I find my enthusiasm for exercise waxes and wanes. Some months, I exercise a lot; some months, I exercise very little. Sometimes I break down and eat, oh, an entire pint of ice cream. From the container. But that’s not the point. What’s important is that I always get back on the horse and try again.

That’s why I was excited to discover My Fitness Pal, a free online program to count calories, nutrients, and water consumption, along with logging exercise. It’s a great all-around tool for helping stay on track with your own fitness needs. And did I mention: it’s FREE?!

I’ve been using My Fitness Pal for over a month now, and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. Along with the tools I just mentioned, the website offers a wealth of other fun features, such as a personal blog, cute goal widgets (that’s my real widget, above), an app for your phone, and a forum.

That’s where you come in.

I cordially invite you all to join me at My Fitness Pal. You’ll find me under the name “semisweetchick.” (Don’t worry; we can’t see each others’ personal information — such as our weight! Yikes!) As people join, I’ll create a forum topic just for our group — something to help motivate us, support us, and keep us on track with our wellness goals. We can discuss our struggles and triumphs, share recipes, and pat each other on the back.

I look forward to meeting all my fellow family caregivers at My Fitness Pal! (Many thanks to my friend Jenifer for inspiring this idea with her private weight loss group at Facebook!)

Disclaimer: I’m not in any way affiliated with My Fitness Pal and receive no remuneration from them whatsoever. I’m just a happy customer!

August 17, 2011

In this series, I’m going to share tips for reducing caregiving expenses in various categories. This post looks at food expenses. We all gotta eat, right? And many caregivers feed not only themselves and their children, but also their parents. If your parents can’t afford to contribute to the food budget, it can wreak financial [...]

The Art of the Getaway

July 18, 2011

Last Saturday, I picked up Mom around 9:30 in the morning, and we took her sporty red jitney (actually a Ford Fusion) on a trip to Ruidoso. Tucked into the south-central mountains of New Mexico, it’s one of my favorite weekend getaways. And since I’ve always wanted to share it with Mom, we decided to [...]

Eat well, eat frugally, eat simply

July 13, 2011

It’s no secret that eating healthy is a key stress-busting strategy. But we tend to equate ‘eating well’ with ‘eating expensively.’ Over the course of the past year, food prices have risen quickly. A decent loaf of bread (and by “decent,” I mean a preservative-free, whole grain bread) can cost $3 or more. How is [...]

Five tips for eating healthier when dining out

July 11, 2011

Every Saturday and Monday, Mom and I go out for lunch. Dining out is one of her main joys in life, so I don’t want to deprive her of it. Yet I find it hard sometimes to make healthy food choices when we go to a restaurant. First, there’s the issue of restaurant choice. I [...]

Why supplements may be bad for you (and your senior)

July 9, 2011

Acai berry: the miracle weight-loss supplement! Resveratrol capsules: reverse heart disease! B vitamins: venerable stress-busters! Everywhere you look these days, a company is pushing pills they say will help you lose weight, fight stress, or even cure particular ailments. But can you really drop 50 pounds by popping a pill? Will taking massive doses of [...]

What’s the Meal Plan, Fran?

July 9, 2011

I firmly believe in diet as a key to stress-busting. But eating healthy, nutritious foods takes planning. Admit it: how many times have you opted for Carl’s Jr. because you were running late and didn’t have anything planned for dinner? My usual excuse runs something like, “I forgot to thaw out any meat.” Next thing [...]

If you are what you eat…

July 9, 2011

…apparently I’ve become a chocolate creme Oreo. I’ve been eating crap lately. And, no surprise, I’ve been feeling like crap, too. I put a lot of stock in the ‘garbage-in, garbage-out’ (GIGO) theory of health. As a nurse, I see far too many patients who have lived their lives on fast food, snack food, and [...]
